MONTAGUE, MI – Women highschool wrestling is on the rise in Michigan.
On Friday night time at Montague Excessive College, it was within the highlight.
Feminine wrestlers from Clinton, Grand Rapids Forest Hills Central, Holland West Ottawa and host Montague had the mat to themselves in a particular quad meet.
“When the MHSAA opened up for B-type competitions, immediately I knew we had to get our girls some mat time and we wanted to get some (competition) before the girls state finals,” Montague coach Kris Maddox mentioned. “I reached out to some of the coaches I knew that had some girls (wrestling) and we threw it together.”
Forest Hills Central had seven wrestlers on the meet, adopted by Clinton and Montague with 5 every and West Ottawa three.
Maddox mentioned that on his squad, which is having fun with a historic season with a 16-2 report, the ladies and boys are on equal footing.
“They’re all one team. We’ve preached team from the beginning and they look at each other as one team, no different,” he mentioned. “The guys are here tonight to support the girls and the girls will be back in the morning to help the guys (in their quad). They just try to get each other better.”
